State Emergency Relief (SER) is one-time help from MDHHS to get through a crisis so you and your family can stay safely housed. It can help with utility or heat shutoffs, back rent you owe, security deposits and moving costs, and urgent home repairs.

SER has strict deadlines, so ask for help the same day you get a shutoff or eviction notice.

**What kinds of emergencies does SER cover?**

**How do I apply?**

Through MI Bridges, the same portal as Medicaid and food assistance. We can complete it with you right away.

**What if I earn too much to qualify?**

MDHHS decides that, not us. SER looks at your household size and your income, but it also looks at the emergency itself and at what you are able to put towards fixing it, so it is not settled on income alone, and the limits are updated every year. Bring your papers and the notice you have been sent, and we will go through it with you. If you are over the limit, we will say so plainly rather than send in an application we expect to be refused, and we will look at what else may help.
