Medicaid Benefit

Free or low-cost health coverage from the State of Michigan. We help you apply and understand whether you may qualify.

Overview

Medicaid is a health-coverage program run by the State of Michigan (MDHHS). It pays for doctor visits, hospital care, prescriptions, maternity care, mental health and other care, at little or no cost. For adults, Michigan also has the Healthy Michigan Plan.

The application can be confusing, especially in English. We help you understand whether you may qualify and complete the application correctly.

Frequently asked questions

Will using Medicaid hurt my green card or citizenship?

Generally no. Under current rules, using Medicaid (except long-term nursing-home care) does not by itself make you a "public charge". Rules can change, so tell us your own situation and we will go through it with you honestly.

I have a green card. Can I get Medicaid?

Many green card holders qualify, often after 5 years as a permanent resident, and some groups such as children and pregnant women may qualify sooner. MDHHS decides based on your situation; we help you apply and understand the rules.

Do I have to speak English to apply?

No. We help you in Bangla, and MDHHS also offers interpreters.

How do I apply?

Most people apply online through MI Bridges, or on paper, or at the local MDHHS office in Wayne County. We can sit with you and complete it together.

Is the document list above everything I will need?

Treat it as a starting point, not a final list. What MDHHS asks for depends on your own circumstances, such as who lives in your household, how you are paid, and your immigration status, so two families applying on the same day can be asked for different papers. The state also updates what it requires from time to time, and it can come back and ask for something more after you have applied. Bring what you have, and we will go through it with you, tell you plainly what is still missing, and help you send it in before any deadline passes.

Is there a fee to apply?

No. Applying for Medicaid is free. Our service charge, if any, is only for the help we provide, and we tell you the amount first.

What if I earn too much to qualify?

MDHHS decides that, not us. Whether you qualify depends on your household size, your income and your circumstances, and the limits are updated every year, so the honest answer is usually that nobody can tell you until your papers are in front of them. Bring what you have and we will go through it with you. If it turns out you are over the limit, we will say so plainly rather than send in an application we expect to be refused, and we will show you what else is open to you. Marketplace health insurance is built for people in exactly that position, and many families qualify for help with the monthly cost.

We assist with paperwork and preparation. We are not attorneys or CPAs and do not provide legal or accounting advice.
